During the last 3 decades a significant amount of development has been implemented to separate operators from the various pharmaceutical process operations in the quest to reduce the risk of contamination towards finished product. It is recognized that the greatest risk to the product is presented by Human operators to the extent that people are considered the "dirtiest" part of aseptic processing. This is the reason containment technology has been long established in the world for Pharmaceutical production. The operator has the issue of less flexibility and manoeuvrability to carry out the necessary process operations.

The Isolator / Glovebox whilst providing the highest level of product containment also presents the highest level of operator restrictions. Restricted-access barrier systems (RABS) which are able to provide a level of aseptic quality near that of isolators, are becoming recognized as the ideal solution in some applications as an alternative to the more traditional ‘Isolator'.
